1st deadline. >> all right. let's move on to vice president joe biden who we know is headed to asia today. 'rifz in tokyo and then he's going to spend a week in the region. what is the overall goal of this trip? >> i think the biggest role that joe biden is playing this week is there's a dispute over an air defense installation that the chinese are starting to set up in an area that is kind of a disputed area between china and japan. joe biden is basically going there not taking a side in the dispute but obviously japan is a major ally in the region. they are balking at what the chinese are trying to do as far as setting up this air defense in this disputed area. so biden is playing kind of a negotiator role, a middle ground role trying to bring the two sides together and avoid some kind of a larger dispute than what's happening right now. >> all right. i believe the president heads there in april. all right. aaron blake with the "washington post," nice to speak you to, sir. >> thank you. >>> coming up next, bill karins and betty will be here for "first buzz." ♪ ♪ ♪ i wanna sp

to the test today. joe biden visiting with chinese president xi jinping. david mckenzie is in beijing following biden's visit. >> reporter: michaela, it was a red carpet welcome for the u.s. vice president but definitely tensions are high in this region. he'll be meeting with xi jinping, china's president, trying to diffuse attention. they announce an air defense zone, the u.s. saying a unilateral move that could lead to a wider conflict between these two economic power houses. biden will have to walk a tight rope in pressuring the chinese to dial back some of the rhetoric but also can't push too far. it's unlikely they'll go away from this zone, which they announced around two weeks ago. michaela? >> david, important meetings to be sure. thank you. the white house is prepared to negotiate a limited nuclear enrichment program for iran as long as the country holds up to its end of an international deal to curtail it's nuclear capabilities under rigorous global monitoring. the white house cautioned the program applies only to the nation's peaceful energy needs. the statement comes days

's start with joe biden and his trip to asia. i know you were a pool reporter on that so welcome home. >> thank you. good trip. >> what exactly was the vice president able to accomplish? >> well, i think there were two things that really were foremost for the obama administration. one there is a stirmish between china and japan over islands in the east china sea. a big problem for international security. joe biden met with both the prime minister of japan and the president of china and said he made clear to china he wanted them to sort of roll back an air defense zone that china established unilaterally and is threatening japanese and even american commercial aircraft that you have to announce before you enter that space that you have to announce to china you're doing so. it's caused a lot of turmoil and headaches and so the vice president really made that clear. the other big thing in the trip was for the obama administration to make clear their so-called pivot to asia is still a viable priority for them, president obama had to cancel a trip to asia during the government shutdown so
